Spec:

CPU
• Intel Core i7-6700K

GPU
• Nvidia GTX 1080-Ti

Motherboard
• Asus Z170-P

SSD
• Samsung 960 Evo NVMe PCIe M.2 250GB

Hard drive
• 3 * WD Green 3TB (2011)

Ram
• Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX 16GB (2X8GB) 3200MHZ
• Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX 32GB (2X16GB) 3200MHZ

CPU Cooler
• Corsair H100i V2

Power Supply Unit
• Corsair RM1000x

Problem:

Until very recently my PC operated perfectly, wherein it would boot through the bios, then into the operating system as expected. Now (I suspect as the result of a surge or short) when I press the power button on the front of the case, nothing happens i.e. the computer doesn’t enter into the bios and instead the connected screen remains black. Connected USBs don’t receive power from the machine, e.g. if I connected a phone usb cable it wouldn’t output power to charge my phone (which it normally would).

I believe this is a motherboard rather than power supply issue as the onboard LED ‘Standby Power LED (SB_PWR)’ illuminates green when the PC plug is switched on, and switches off when the PC plug is switched off.

So far:

• I’ve confirmed the power cable is fine.

• I’ve replaced the motherboard battery with a fresh one.

• I’ve checked the power button cables are connected properly. As in image below (even if I move ‘Power LED-‘ one slot to the right, the problem still remains):

• I’ve checked everything is seated correctly.

• I’ve slightly touch PWR_SW with a screwdriver when the power is ON, but this didn’t cause anything to occur e.g booting. As suggested by Asus support to force a restart:
https://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1030151

• I’ve performed the paper-clip test on the psu which powered on several of my devices, which clarifies that the problem isn’t the psu.

• I’ve attempted to power up the system on minimum hardware to troubleshoot i.e by removing the 3 HDD, gtx 1080TI and all but one RAM card, without any success.

• I’ve attempted to power up the system on ultra minimum hardware to troubleshoot i.e by removing the 3 HDD as well as the SSD, gtx 1080TI and all the RAM, without any success.

What would you advise to solve this? as so far I’ve not been able to.

Solution
Next, remove all 3 of the HDD, gtx 1080, only one stick RAM, use onboard iGPU, before you boot the PC, clear the CMOS first. That means you will use minimum hardware to troubleshoot.

If you get the same, not boot at all. Next remove the M2 ssd and the RAM too. if you have the regular air cooler use it too. Do the same thing, before boot, to clear the CMOS. Boot the PC without any RAM, any SSD and HDD, use onboard iGPU, cpu cooler. If the PC will not boot under these conditions, either the CPU or the MB may have problem.

Just tried that, it still doesn’t turn on when I press the power button.

The only thing that changed when I removed additional parts, was the number and length of beeps/flashes of the green ‘Standby Power LED (SB_PWR)’ e.g. Memory parity error when I had removed all but one ram card and left it in the wrong slot.

Is there anything else you would advise?
