Hello,

I want to upgrade my AMD Turion MK-36 CPU (1 core - 2ghz - 31 watt) and I would appreciaye it if you could advise me on which of the two CPUs below makes sense to choose.

  • AMD Tyler TL-66 TMDTL66HAX5DC (2 core - 2.3ghz - 35 watt)
  • AMD Tyler TL-60 TMDTL60HAX5DC (2 core - 2.0ghz - 31 watt)

  • The advantage of TL-60 is that it consumes 4 Watt less energy than TL-66 (less heat will be released)

  • On the other hand, the advantage of the TL-66 is that it is 300 MHz faster than TL-60.

I am waiting for your suggestions

Thanks in advance

If the current cooler can handle 31 watts....I would be surprised if it couldn't handle 35 watts.
Although, I would check the temps as it is now to see how much headroom I had.

My 31 watts AMD MK-36 CPU is generally between 68-78 degrees on average, what do you think? Will it be able to handle 35 Watts?

There's a couple of different problems with your proposed upgrade. One is that the cpus both are higher tdp than your current one, which is a big no-no for laptops. Second, is that the cpus you're looking at may not be supported by the laptop. And third is that the cpus you're looking at come in various different versions, so that may even make finding the right upgrade even more difficult.

I have to commend you on using a mobile processor of that core count (1) and speed into the modern era. I also rather wonder what you are doing on this machine. I cannot imagine it running on anything aside from an outdated MS OS, or a lite Linux flavor.

Depends on the cooling. While higher performance from the TL-66 will always be an advantage, if the cooling cannot reasonably handle the additional core and the additional heat output, then it's a wasted effort and the TL-60 would be the better option overall.
