Hi all,

I was wondering if the Tom's crowd (who is much more knowledgeable than I) had thoughts on whether it'd be worth upgrading anything in my gaming rig which I put together in early 2015. The only thing I can really think of is the SSD. The M2's like 860 Pro are rated for *much* higher speeds than my 850 Evo, but I'm not sure what real-world performance gains would be realized. Any opinions on this??

I'm also planning on swapping the Skylake CPU for a Coffee Lake one when they come out this year, as it uses the exact same socket and wouldn't require a new motherboard.

Honestly that's a beast of a computer. I don't see anything worth changing at this point.

If you're itching for something new to put in there, a GTX 1080 Ti would be a reasonable step-up from the 980 Ti.

Real world performance gains are likely to be negligible.

As for CoffeeLake, that's pushed to early 2018 last I heard..... and I doubt it's going to bring any groundbreaking improvements over Skylake or KabyLake.

The only thing I'd even consider upgrading from that build would be the GPU - if you'll see any benefits from it in the titles you play. A 980TI is only marginally below a 1070, so I'd look to a minimum 1080 or 1080TI for 1440p / 165Hz. .... but depending on the titles you play, those may be a little overkill

Should still be able to recoup $300 from the 980TI, but you'd still be looking at +$250 for a 1080 and +$400 or so for a 1080TI.

Thanks Barty. The GPU doesn't *seem* to be bottlenecking anything yet. Perhaps after the bitcoin mining bubble bursts and card prices come down I'll upgrade to the 1080 Ti as you pointed out.

Good to hear I'm not missing anything much with my existing SSD. Also, Cannonlake (10 nm) was delayed to 2018, Coffee Lake (14 nm) is still on for Autumn 2017, IIRC.

Hmmm, I thought CoffeeLake was pushed to Q1 2018.... but cant find anything on it now. Most references were "second half of 2017", which could be tomorrow, or December..... but I'm now seeing mentions of "holiday season", which would indicate it would be very late Autumn/Fall 2017.

Even Cannonlake and the die shrink, I'm not expecting to see any substantial gains. Although with competitor from Ryzen, the 'gains' may be from a price standpoint.
