I wanna buy a cheap portable, max 1500$, with basically:

Celeron or higher
128 MB RAM
Modem and ethernet
14.1''

Been looking at Toshibas, but think they are a bit expensive. I live in Spain, so technical service could make a difference.

Thanks

Check out mine. It costed 1550$ (620.000 DRS here in Greece)

Hewlett Packard Omnibook XE3
Pentium III, 700 MHz
64 MB Ram (I added another 128- now is 192MB !)
TFT 13,3" display
10 GB hard disk
1 floppy
1 cd-rom 24x
8 MB Vga card Savage IX, with tv -out
2 USB, 1 Parallel, 1 serial, 2 PCMCIA
Mic out, Headphones out
Lithium battery
Window 98 se, various progs
carrying case
VGA out (crt connection)

I bought this through a company - I just didn't pay the profit that an outside store would take. So, all the above, without lets say the 64MB of the ram i have - will probably reach the money I told you at a store.

You live in Spain, I live in the UK, so you might be able to buy this notebook, for £899 ($1500 ?), I've just seen it in my company circulars (it's consumer though):

Atlas Flyer 3400-800 (based on Uniwill 340S2)

PIII-800MHz
128MB RAM
10GB HDD
SIS630 Chipset
DVD-ROM Drive
14.1" XGA TFT
10/100 LAN
56K modem
Li-Ion Battery

Don't know anymore. Looks good anyhoo.

I would strongly suggest either an IBM or Dell laptop. But for your budget, a good IBM would cost too much, so you should go for this:

Dell Inspiron 4000--$1,329
PIII 700mhz (w/speed step)(PIII 900mhz is $200 extra)
14.1" XGA TFT Display
128mb RAM
10 GB HD
24x CD-ROM (upgrade to a DVD for $79)
Internal 56k v.90 modem plus 10/100 ethernet
WinME

If you want to spend more, you can go for the Inspiron 8000 model with the i815 chipset and Geforce2 Go graphics.

oh...do NOT get a Sony Viao!! They are rip-off pieces of crap!! Even for their SIZE. There are BETTER(and cheaper) models for the "road warriors" that demand ultra portability (IBM and DELL come to mind). I have used my friends Viao for a while and the only thing "good" about it was its screen. Viaos are expensive and and have poor performance, even for its size.
