SUN microsys? what is it

back when i used to be in school(graduated last year) some of the school's system used to run sun. i never really got into it but what is it exactly? i was able to run winnt within sun and many other os. is sun an os for the os?

SUN is a hardware company well known for producing the SPARC architecture (32 and 64 bit) Their hardware runs a proprietary UNIX OS called Solaris ('slowaris' ;)) or in the old days SunOS. Of course Linux is also available in 32 and 64 bit forms for the sparc architecturea s well as NetBSD and OpenBSD (32-bit only).
