Hey! Y'All,

I'm looking for a Cheap-upgrade for my good ol' Pentium box, so that it'll still keep up with my latest machine.

I want to recycle everything except the M/B. Here's what I've got:

Pentium 166 (Classic, non-MMX)
1996 A-Trend ATC1000 Intel 430FX (AT Form)
32 MB 72pin RAM
AT case.
Some other stuff.

I've been looking at Super Socket 7 Mainboards from ASUS & Gig & others. They all seem OK - I can run my CPU for now and upgrade it later on if I want. It's RAM that I'm stuck on - most don't support 72 pin SIMMs.

The J-Mark JetBoard J542B is the only one I can find so far that can take either 72 pin SIMMs or 168 pin DIMMs. Being able to use SIMMs now will keep the cost down.

It also has PCI Bus Mastering v2.1 - I won't be upgrading without this spec.

Does anyone know of any other *new* SS7 M/B from another company that can take SIMMs as well as DIMMs, and supports PCI v2.1?

Has anyone already got a JetBoard J542B? Any clues about it - is it good?

Does anyone know where I can buy the JetBoard in Melbourne, Australia?

Thanks!

Artoo, those Boot Errors must have broken loose again. See if you can't lock it back down...

One answer: AOpen AX59Pro. A sweet board that I've used building Super7 systems. It has some 72-pin slots. Don't lose too much time before you pick up a socket 7 processor from AMD - they're already obsolete and disappearing. K6-2 500MHz is cheap, fast and still common. You will eventually want to get some 168-pin memory (100MHz or better SDRAM), because it makes a huge difference.

One other thing, this is an ATX board, so you'll need a case and power supply (a good idea anyway). I don't know about Melbourne, but this board and other good Super7s can still be found in Ottawa, Canada.

acorp 561ali
at form factor
2 dimm 2 simm
aladdin v
will accept k63+ processor - runs faster than any k62, is overclockable, and much cheaper ($50 pcliquidators.com) than the k6-2. i have this board and the asus p5ab and the acorp is better. supports ultra 66 to boot. email me if you have further ?

Hey! Guys,

Thanks Starhawk & haydeen.

Starhawk, I've looked at the AX59Pro, and other ATX SS7's. The ATX factor counts them out - I'm being as tight as I can with this cheap-grade, err... upgrade.

It'll be great to keep my old box running for a while longer, but I'm not going too far with new parts - When the $buckage for an upgrade gets too high, I wont spend it on SS7. (The way things are looking, it'll be lucky to stay plugged in  )

haydeen, I'll look into the Acorp board. I haven't found a website. I think it's www.acorpusa.com - but I can't get into it. I'll try later.

Hmmm. Wassup with the AMD K6? I thought they were still making & selling them - guess I better scope out AMD. If they're gonna stop making them, then maybe by Pentium can R.I.P. anyway!

Thanks!

If you can try to find Asus Tx97-X.
they support all that you want (AT casing 4xSIMMS 2xDIMMS 2.1 PCI).
But consider this:No AGP.
The FSB goes only as high as 83 MHZ!
I have the Asus tx97-xe(ATX form )
And i`m runnig amd k6-2 500 MHz And its Kicks MY old 166@200 MMX to hell!

Hey Hey!

OK! Cool looking specs on the Acorp 5ALI61. 😎
D'oh! Acorp don't have a POP in Aust... no distribution - No Sale! :frown:

Thanks Tormented.

That ASUS TX board'll be hard to find up here in Australia. I think the Jetboard specs top that one. Now, if only I can find one...

Don't forget the FIC VA503+.
It has some Simm slots, 3 PCI slots, 3 ISA slots, one AGP slot, and it may even have some Dimm slots if you ever need them.
It can handle up to the K6-III 450 and is an AT style board.

Hey Hey Hey!

Thanks Bubba, that's another to scope out.

Woo-hoo! Now I've got SS7's coming out of my e-ears!

Jetway J542B or J542C
SOYO SY-5EHM
FIC VA-503+

I like the look of that FIC. I might be able to get one here - most other FIC boards are available.

Thanks!

I'd be carefull with the FIC boards. I've had lots of trouble with them. I won't sell them through my company anymore. Cost me too much money. Soyo is ok, nothing to write home about. Never heard of Jetway before.

You might also check out the Shuttle 591P. We've used one of these. No complaints.

Gee, it's windy - and there goes my caution...

Managed to get a Jetway Jetboard J542C http://(www.jetway.com.tw) here in Melbourne for AUD$120 (which is around about US$3 at the moment). 😱 ?

Anyway, it has installed OK and everything runs fine - only a few tweeks left to do. If it is still running in five years, like the 430FX its replacing, then I guess I'll be happy.

Try searching ebay for a msi 5185 MOBO also known as a gateway ms-5182. Yes it is atx, yes it has only dimms and no simms. Ram is cheap now and 32 is not enough for anything so you will have to get more anyways. I have picked up over a dozen of these boards for around 50 bucks a piece. You are on a budget and this board has onboard video and creative 1373 sound. What is special about this board is that the onboard video is ATI rage2 2x AGP with its own 8 megs of memory on the board, none of that sharing crap. Use your 166 untill you get enough for a better cpu then I suggest getting an AMD k6-3 350 for about 50 bucks. have not had one yet that would not at least clock to 400 and most will do 450. Not trying to say this is an ultiamte gaming machine but it is hard to beat for the price.
