So I've been to Jotenhiem, killed Morvenn, won the castle and developed
it, killed the Carn wolf and given the heart to the boss giant, who has
promptly demolished me. Have I screwed up somewhere or do you really
have to kill this guy and all his equally hairy guards in order to get
the ring? If so I've got some serious character-buffing to do!

Lord Malal's preferred method of fighting serious enemies is the
saturation airstrike which worked fine on the wolf, but with levitation
disabled I'm stuck with a toe to toe slugfest...

Not at all.

Yes... Good luck. :)

Actually, "only" (harhar) the two guards in the throne hall which are
together with the boss. When you leave the throne hall, all guards will
attack you as well, but you can sneak past them invisible.

I had a horrible feeling you were going to say that....Lord Malal has
strength of 145, life of 400+, armour rating of 220ish, a DDK with 75
points of fire damage - and lasted approximately three seconds. How bad
do I want this ring that I don't even know what it does.....<sigh>

Oh well, that's something then ;-)

Turn down the difficulty slider for this fight? If you are playing at
difficulty 100, that giant probably does > 300 damage with one hit.

Mmmmmm, maybe....even Lord Malal isn't normally _that_ underhand!!

I thought the same about my character until this fight. Took me a couple
of reloads to overcome my pride and finally turn the difficulty down.
Not complaining, though, Morrowind isn't really full of challenges for a
level > 30 char.

Say what?

(1) Yes you DO have to kill him
(2) I certainly had no trouble using levitation potions in that room.
Flying on top of the two ice cages is a good idea if you're using
magic or arrows.
(3) Fortify Strength potions are wonderful things
(4) So are Jink Swords so long as you remember to IMMEDIATELY swap
weapons once you paralyze him and keep switching back as often as you
DO need to paralyze him
(5) The Amulet of Shadows is incredibly valuable here particularly if
you have another object to bring your chameleon to 100%

(6) After you kill him, DON'T teleport away but DO run like mad to the
entrance and talk to the gate keeper.
(7) Don't give away the ring for anything!

This was one of the toughest swordfests of the basic game or any mod
I've seen - certainly Dagoth Ur was easy by comparison.

I did it with difficulty 100%

Like I say it was one of the toughest in the game or any mod I've seen
and that includes Firemoth.

I drank about 10 Fortify Strengths and learned to love my jinksword -
and reloaded a LOT

Well, after getting my arse handed me another six times last night I'm
going to have to bow to your superior wisdom and try it your way
tonight! Agree though, its nice to have an actual challenge again!

I don't remember exactly, but I am pretty sure I also got this
no-levitation message down there. I most certainly tried to use one of
my emergency levitation potions to get out of reach and then blast from
above (standard tactics for tougher fights) but for whatever reason that
wasn't available. Of course, then the whole battle would be easy, so I
suppose the author disabled it for exactly this reason.

Yeah, I assume so. It worked on the Carn wolf though - thankfully!

You DON'T need to turn down the difficulty! I did it on 100 with a
level 24 character. The Staff of Stadia (sp?) was a big help and then
you flailed away with stuff like the Ice Sword of the Monarch or
whatever it's called. You CAN use Garm's blood (I did in an earlier
effort where I died after I had killed one guard and taken our friend
down to 20%) but you don't need to. I have one custom built Flame 35
spell which is 35 pts fire damage for 3 seconds which also helped a
lot plus numerous Restore Magicka potions since it costs 52 pts per
cast. But mainly strategic use of levitate to back out of the battle
when needed to let the Restore Magicka and Restore Health do their
thing before wading in again to flail away. (I did this 3 or 4 times
in my final attempt).

But no question about it this battle is doable with difficulty 100%.

I chiefly used the Levitate to back off when my magicka and health
were lower than I wanted. That and to position myself so I could hit
Thrym without being hit by more than one frost giant at a time.

With levitation it wasn't easy I assure you...

Perhaps I should go back and see if I can cast a spell to levitate in
there - every I did was with potions.

Any idea if there is a way in that mod to use stahlrim? (Other than
the way you get towards the end of Bloodmoon)

😱) We're lightweights mate, there's a guy called Werner over on
comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.rpg who's running about 180.....!

No, you're not. I'm running about 130 mods and by now it is almost
more fun to make all those mods compatible to each other than
playing the game. In particular I enjoyed editing my own house to
blend in with "Windows Glow" and "Necessities of Morrowind".
