Surface Book - USB C external monitor

Hey all,

I have an OG Surface Book that I'm trying to get connected to a USB C monitor (ASUS Zenscreen). I tried using a USB A to C 3.1 cable (Anker), and it's not working. It gets power, but no display.

Before I go try a mini-DP to USB C, the question is, does the Surface Book 1 even support this? All my Googling results in Surface Book 2 dialogue, can't find much on the original.

Any help is appreciated.

Along these same lines... Display port to USB c. Does that work? I'm assuming not.
