I looked through THG and didn't see any topics covering surge protectors, surge supressors, line conditioners, UPS, voltage regulator/UPS combos...

Anyone have the full scoop on the differences, what each does and DOESN'T do, which is best, what to avoid, maybe a government or industry web page that has the definitive info on all this stuff. I've seen enough half info, could be this or that, websites thanks.

Any help along these lines, or if there are posts here at THG that explain all this, would be greatly appreciated.

I am no expert on this subject so correct me listerz if I am wrong.

A surge protector and surge supressors are the same thing. They protect you computer from electrical spikes. For example, a power surge or a lightning stike on your power lines. I do not think the cheaps one will work that well. Also, make sure all phone lines are hooked up to the protectors.

Line conditioners clean up the electricity coming into your home. I have some for my stereo systems, it helps to take away electrical interference.

UPS= Uninteruptible(sp?) power supply. What this device does is protect against the power spikes and etc. Also, they have batteries in them that allow you a certain amount of time to shut down your computer, if you lose power, and not lose any of your files.

Voltage regulator/UPS combos. I believe all UPS's regulate voltage.

It depends on what you need. At least get a good surge protector. If you lose power alot and need to make sure files are not lost, get a UPS. They do not cost that much.

Another important point, make sure your house or office has good electrical grounding.

Thanks for dropping in and commenting Prisoner.

I kept seaching the web after I posted this last night and came across what appears to be the mother load of info on surge protection. You are right about some of what you said and wrong about some of it, just the same as myself. I couldn't find any REAL information on all these devices or the information was incomplete.

Go here and learn. http://www.zerosurge.com/

They have alot of info there. I haven't bought any of ZeroSurge's products yet and am not advertising for them. I also am still learning what the hell all these surge devices are and do as I said. This site though explains about 99% of it, giving government standards and what to look for when you buy one, what each does and doesn't do etc... Quite eye opening much of it.
Unless someone posts something here to the contrary, this site and the products shown seem to be the gold standard for protecting electrical devices.
Let me know what you think. I rely on others feedback to make sure I am making an objective observation.
