Surroud Sound Audio Capability for ASUS P8Z77 V-LK Motherboard

Hello, Tom's Hardware!
My question is: Whenever I plug in my headphones, ASUS Audio Manager pops up and in the manager I can set the audio channel to Stereo, Mono, 5.1 Surround and 7.1 Surround, but does this mean I do not have to buy a sound card to use 7.1 or 5.1? I am just confused whether I will be able to use surround sound with this motherboard. I'm asking this, because I am planning on buying the AD-700x Headphones and using them in 7.1 Surround Sound.

No, you cannot run stereo (two channel) headphones in multi-channel surround. The headphones you spaak of are 2 channel only. To run 5.1 or 7.1, you will need true 5.1 or 7.1 channel headphones.
