So my current motherboard (Gigabyte Z97X SLI) has 6 3.5mm audio ports. One of them is blue. My Razer Tiamat 7.1 headset uses all of them except the blue. If I were to get a motherboard that only had five, could I put whichever cord no longer has a slot into the blue one and call it a day? That would be the orange cord I believe.

Solution
The colors are coded for the speakers they provide.

Green is Line/headphone out / Front L and R
Orange is Center / Sub(LFE)
Black is Rear Left and Right
Grey is Side right and Left
Pink is Mic
Blue is Line in Right and Left.

Some systems allow these ports to be remapped to do ANY of the above functions, but it seems less and less common these days and new drivers actually take the feature away from older hardware.

I discovered the motherboard I was looking into getting actually allows use of the blue port as both line in left/right and side-left/right out.

It matches the white cord of the headset. Thank you!
