Surround sound system with playstation

Hi,
I'm trying to connect my playstation 3 and sky box to my surround sound system.
I've got the audio from the centre speaker but not from the others. The built in radio on the system works with all the speakers.
The playstation and sky box are both connected to the system with RCA cables.

I set up a surround system with my ps3 a few years ago
Via rca not digital optical
Hooked it upto the tv itself, change the settings from tv speakers to External speakers/audio system
(although saying that it actually connects to the headphone jack)

If you're connecting to a separate surround systems (amplifier) you may need to change the sound settings on the ps3 to speaker, if that makes sense? Not sure about the sky box but perhaps the same
Check the audio settings (eg: RCA, Line in, Digital Optical)
