Is it possible to send surround sound through motherboard hdmi? Basically the surround sound system cannot be hooked up to the tv so I have two hdmi ports on the back of my case the motherboard one and my r9 290 port, the r9 290 is being used for display so I suppose I couldn't use it for sound is there any way to also activate the motherboard hdmi? Could I run the display though the motherboard hdmi instead of graphics card then plug graphics card hdmi into audio receiver?

Solution
In realtek manager, see what settings are available (different versions had different options).

Also, most sources on PC (even Netflix) are only 2.0 so you will have to set the receiver to be in auto-surround mode (your receiver will likely call this something different) so that it will force audio from the other speakers.

Even if it is a pain, you should hookup your TV right and then not have to deal with it.

If you have separate Cable Reveiver:
All devices plug into Surround Receiver inputs, Receiver output video to TV via HDMI

If using tuner on TV:
TV output audio to Surround Receiver via SPDIF (set TV to external speakers, and output audio to SPDIF)
Hookup all devices to Surround inputs, output video to TV.
Switch receiver to...
Why don't you explain how you have everything currently hooked up, and why you cant hook up the tv to the surround receiver.

You can output both audio and video on the 1 hdmi cable.
If you have an intel board then you can use both motherboard and dedicated GPU ports at the same time.

The tv is wall mounted, very heavy, and closely mounted so its a huge hassle to add in stuff like and hdmi from the tv to the receiver, instead the tv/cable box is hooked up to surround sound through s/pdif since it sits way below the tv. The tv has an hdmi in going to my pc and the receiver has hdmi in. Do i need to enable the motherboard port first in order to use the discrete gpu to power it's output, will only the gpu hdmi allow surround sound output?
motherboard is gigabyte z97 sli so no s/pdif out unless i got some device to do so, which I would if neccesary

Do you have windows and realtek manager setup to output surround sound?
Is the source surround sound? If you just play a youtube video or something that is not surround sound, it is not going to output surround sound.

Just to be clear, right now your PC goes to TV via hdmi, and tv outputs audio to receiver via spdif?

Oh lol, where do I find a surround sound source, I have windows 8.1 Pro and realtek installed but neither has any special settings turned on for surround sound. In audio devices it doesn't seem to let me "test" more than two channels and only through my tv.
It goes hmdi into receiver out to tv now

I currently have it hooked up pc to sep receiver (sony with hdmi support) to tv but it looks like receiver is just becoming a passthrough it won't get any signal at all
Only my tv is detected in playback devices not the audio receiver
Just installed realtek ati hdmi drivers and now all audio is gone except an "unplugged" hdmi and a s.pdif port that doesnt exist.
Seems like the amd audio drivers were completely uninstalled for whatever reason by realtek
It might be worth noting that I have gigabyte realtek drivers that only seem to be for the s/pdif (no external port) and the jacks rather than generic full realtek drivers?
Another post said that the Realtek hdmi drivers could be the solution but they just uninstall the amd drivers and the display will no longer go over hdmi, while the hdmi will still not detect the receiver.
Is it possible the reciever doesn't support audio over hdmi?
