I work for a company that sells goods for security systems which includes cameras and DVR's (digital video recorders) They recently decided to scrap some of these DVR's and hard drives as old unsellable stock, so I ended up keeping a small handful of these drives which were simply being tossed out. These drives are mostly Western Digital Purples and one Seagate SV ranging from 1 to 4TB - all rated as "surveillance" grade and also a Western Digital 2TB in a "Gold" grade. I don't totally understand what makes these drives different from your "mainstream" grade drives and if there is any reason I could not use them as secondary drives in one of my systems or as back-ups. I plugged one of 2TB WD units into an external docking port and set it up as a back up for my main drive on my gaming system, which is a 1TB SSD. Seems to work as any other drive would. Also the "Gold" drive would be rated for data centers I believe.

Durability at constant writes mostly, speed is not foremost with them but usable for storage and backup PCs.
