How do I know which type of resource is
the best/highest quality? The survey tool
shows the list of resources on that particular
planet, but there are more than one type of
copper, ore, etc.

By sampling each one of them and then checking stats of samples. Or by
asking around those who sampled those already. But watch out for resource
shifts - these change stats and availability of resource types regularly
(or irregularly). Unfortunately, there is no "Resources Daily" newspaper
in SWG ;-) There are new droids (survey droids) which you can send to
other planets to do surveying for you.

You can save yourself some sampling time sometimes by checking
"Current Resources" on SWGCraft.com as well.

Like Skinner said, swgcraft.com is an excellent resource data site. You can
view the current resource data for your server and see just what is worth
mining. Unfortunately some people just use the site to check and not add /
change stuff. I try to devote an hour or two per week just sampling
everything on my guild's planet to keep the site updated. Surveying droids
now make it easier to see what is on what planet but you still have to
survey for the best spots and sample to check the stats.

I am betting some time down the road the Survey Droids might be
expanded to help pinpoint possible concentrations.

no. only a couple of resources at "swgcraft.com" are current. i randomly
check the site and have found that i have put harvesters down or found a new
resource "days" before it hit the site.you have to do what everyone else
does, go sample. some resources you will find on more than one planet. most
resources are just on one planet.

And you completely miss the point behind the site. It REQUIRES the users of
the site to help out.

You survey on Lok on June 7. You notice that there is no Duralloy Steel.
You survey again on June 8 and see that Duralloy Steel is now on Lok. A
fresh spawn. You check the site and sure enough, it's not there.

THIS is where YOU come in. Survey for and take a sample of the resource.
Add the resource data to the site for your server and planet. This way when
Joe Shmoe artisan looks at the site, he'll know Lok has a brand new spawn of
Duralloy steel and will set down harvesters with more than just a day or
two's maintenance. You just helped another player. Feels good, doesn't it?

The site does NOT automatically keep tabs on resources. It needs the users
of the site to mark a resource as unavailable so it won't show up in the
list. I've seen resources stay on the site for more than a month at a time
simply because no one took the time to remove them.

Don't tell me you actually thought a website host would do all the work for
every server and planet each day? The site is free for people to use. But
it doesn't mean everyone who uses it should freeload and not pitch in and
help keep the database up to date.

your message sounded kinda angry. i have checked the site. most are
sometimes as many as 30 days behind. its not worth it to me to go thru the
whole login process. joining the site and making sure i give the info
needed to keep it up to date.. i just use it for harvester calculator

My experience is that the Corbantis listings are rarely more than a day
behind the times, and I do submit an update when I spot something new.

Caveat: it's current for things that I care about. Some things are always
behind because people don't care enough about them to bother checking, let
alone updating. Fish meat is a good example, simply because it is such a
bore to try to gather much. Stats on Wind and Solar are another, because
the PE is always basically the same, who cares what it is called - just find
a new spot when it runs out, and all serious power users are on the Rad
standard (which IS carefully tracked and updated!).

The easiest and most accurate way I use is to to use a harvester and select
the "Change Resource" tab - and NOT a survey tool.
From there, you see everthing that is available on the planet and I can get
a sample of most of them by changing a resource to a different resource and
when I get a 1 unit sample, I just retrive the resouce into my inventory. I
also have a sheet of paper that has a table on it and I write down the
resouce specs. Pretty easy - a Tabel such as:
Date Type Name CR CD DR HR MA OQ SR
UT
(1)Tue 9 Copper Sonau 565 840 554 499 869 948 664
629
(1)Tue 9 Steel whatever.....
(2)Wed 10 Copper Jinu 344 420 466 330 890 920 998
421

So, if I'm looking for something that has high OQ or high SR - this can
easily be found. When a resouce has left - I put a G (for Gone) - when a
new resource comes - I put in a new number, so I know just which are current
resources, the new spawns and how long they last.

Typically, the resource that has the most qualities over 900 are the best.
Sounds like a bit of work but I find it's well worth it. As for other
planets, I rely on swgcraft.com and friends to tell me if there's anything
good there. To do interplanetary harvesting, a resouce would have to be of
very high qual for me to consider it. Generally, swgcraft.com is pretty
good.
