was getting lots of probs/blue screens with my Athlon64/Asus A8V so I wiped
it and did a clean install of WinXP with SP2 and all updates and patches.

Now, I regularly get:

svchost.exe application error
The instruction at "0x000001f0" referenced memory at "0x000001f0". The
memory could not be "written".
Click ok to terminate the program. Click cancel to debug the program.

This happens on booting the computer and when loading a program (eg.
Internet explorer, outlook express)

Any ideas please guys?

I usually find that this is a driver issue. Here's my "generic" fix list:

1) Visit Windows Update and ensure that you've got all the updates for your
system.
2) Update your BIOS
3) Update all your motherboard drivers to the latest version at the
manufacturer's website
4) Update your video drivers to the latest WHQL certified version available
at the manufacturer of your GPU (nVidia or ATI generally)
5) Update your sound drivers to the latest WHQL certified (if available)
from the manufacturer of your sound card
6) Update you modem/LAN drivers to the latest available from the
manufacturer of your modem/NIC.
7) Update all your other hardeware at the manufacturer's sites
8) Udpate all your software (particularly the stuff that controls access to
the web) at the manufacturer's website.

The reason for WHQL certified drivers is that they are certified by
Microsoft to work with Windows. You can always go back to non-certified
drivers after you finish troubleshooting.

The reason for using the manufacturer's site rather than the seller's site
is that, frequently sellers add onto the original driver program. This may
or may not cause problems with your system - but it's a case of reducing the
variables in your system to the lowest possible level in order to
troubleshoot the problem. (ie The more stuff is in the drivers, the more
trouble it'll be to fix it).
