Hello,

I have a Dell Dimension PC with Pentium 4 2.4Ghz processor. I recently acquired a Pentium 4 3.2Ghz processor and wanted to know if I can swap it on to the Dell Dimension motherboard?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Need more specific info on the your current CPU or motherboard.
Pentium 4 2.4Ghz could mean either:
Pentium 4 2.6Ghz Northwood 130NM 1.525V & 58.9W TDP
Pentium 4 2.6Ghz Prescott 90nm 1.25/1.4V & 89W TDP
or maybe even something else.

Pentium 4 3.2Ghz CPU is probably a Prescott. Just need to the motherboard data to be able to check if they work together.

You can use CPU-z utility program to get the motherboard/mainboard details. Of you can use the Dell support site to find the answer there.

It all depends on two things. One will it even fit in the motherboard and two if its a Pentium 4 3.2ghz with Hyper Threading then yea it would be worth swapping it out.

I looked on Dells website and it looks to me that it should support any socket 775 Pentium processors so I would definitely swap it out.

Here are some info I got for Pentium 4 3.2Ghz computer. Still have to check the dell. I will provide that information tomorrow.

Pentium 4 540
Code name Prescott
Socket 775GA
Core V: 1.360
Multiplier X16
Bus 200.9Mhz
Rated FSB: 803.6Mhz
Chipset i915/i915G
Southbridge 82801FB

Pentium 4 540 is a Prescott socket 775 (775 pins) CPU.

More likely than not your Pentium 4 2.4Ghz is a socket 478 (478 pins)CPU.
If that is the case it's not physically possible use a socket 775 for an upgrade.
Check the Dell system to confirm that.
