Switch or New-Router

A kindle fire hd is stealing 90% of the bandwidth on our home internet connection. The wireless router we have doesn't have an option to reduce the amount of bandwidth that goes to a certain ip address. I need my speed on my desktop to be fast for gaming and my Ethernet cable plugs into the router because it's a switch as well as a router. Question is, should I buy a new router so I can manage bandwidth or get a switch that can prioritize devices plugged into it?

Solution
QoS will let you directly modify how much traffic a specific IP Address gets. For example, the QoS options on DD-WRT let you specifically manage what % of total traffic a connection can have.

Any router or firmware that has QoS will give you total control over your network throughput. In DD-WRT you can limit it specifically by IP Address, Device, and Application.

Here's a link to the Quality of Service wiki of DDW-RT. Even if you end up getting a QoS router with a different firmware this might help you see what options are available to you in QoS.

One option, depending on your router, is you might be able to flash DD-WRT to the firmware. DD-WRT has the option to manage specific application/ port throughput.

Here's a like to their website if you want to take a look: http://www.dd-wrt.com/

Edit: If your router is compatible, look at the Quality of Service (QoS) section of their tutorial/ wiki.

Edit 2: Also, don't do this if you are using/ renting a cable company's router!!

You need a router capable of QoS management (Quality of Service). You can do as suggested by previous post, or find a router than will manage the bandwidth better. You don't have to spend a lot, just look for a router that has QoS, or can be flashed to DD-WRT firmware, which does have QoS.

Ok I've heard about this qos feature but unfortunately my router doesn't support it. I'll look into one that does. And you say not to do it if I'm using a cable company's router, I'm using a Belkin WiFi router and a Cox phone and internet modem.
Finally how much control does qos or ddrt actually give you? I want to be able to control the amount of mb/s (or however it's referred as) that goes to an ip address/device.
