Need a switch for my home office, and want to know if I need the 1000 vs 10/100. The only devices that will be hooked up for LAN will be the 2 PCs, maybe mac if needed. I do a lot of streaming and video content over the internet.

Q1 will the 10/100 be sufficient or is the 10/100/1000 that much faster?
Q2 Any brand I should avoid, i was looking into Linksys/Cisco/TPLINK

I just setup a new home office and have the following devices:

Router: Linksys e4200
SAMSUNG HDTV
2 PC (win 10) - newer models
1 MAC
PS4

Thanks

Your network will be only as fast as the slowest link.

Most likely your internet streaming will be the limiting factor. Depending on the service level you pay for, local traffic, throttling by ISP, etc..

However for future proofing go with 1000. Eventually your wired and wireless adapters will need to be brought up to 1GB .

Listed brands all good, but there will be debates on all sides. Generally I recommend having all the same brand as much as possible to prevent finger-pointing between manufacturers.

At first glance, my thought would be the TP-Link 8 port: (8 ports vs 5 ports for growth) and the price on the D-Link is low but "you pay for what you get" still holds....

That said, also consider Linksys WRT 8-Port Gigabit Switch as your router is Linksys. Again, if something goes wrong, Linksys will blame Switch X and Switch X will blame Linksys.

Not promoting Linksys per se but I have had good luck with their products. Other people have not.

However, I would want to go to the store and pick any prospective switch up to get a sense of its build and quality.

Sometimes stores only have main unit available and that can be a dummy unit. Need to look at the power supply and other accessories. Vendor provide a ethernet cable but a good look reveals it to be of poor quality, ridiculously short, etc.

I also would go to the respective manufacturer's sites to read the User Guide/Manuals, FAQs, and forums.

Would like to find and read some additional reviews and validated owner (meaning someone who purchased and used/using) comments.

the TL-SG105 says its Maximum Data Speed 2000 mbps and all others are 1000.

Is that speed true? - I do not need the 8 vs. 5.....yea its nice to have but not if my speed is doubled with 5 ports (cause I mainly will be using 2 maybe 3 or 4 later.

Please let me know I will order this weeked.

Thanks

Do not know where 2000 mbps may have come from. Some marketing "twist" maybe.... Even if 2000 is real, the network will only be 1000 anyway because of the other devices.

If you already have a margin on the number of ports - 5 vs 8 does not matter. However, for a better quality product, good reviews, obvious manufacturer support, no harm in 8.

These 2 switches that Im debating:

TP Link: TL-SG1005D
NETGEAR: TL-SG105

Q1. Will both Ports in back provide 1GB Speed per or only #4
FINAL Question: Is speed same on all ports?

Router: E4200 all CAT6 cables to everything.

Thanks

Q1) All ports should be capable of 10/100/1000 speeds. (Full disclosure: not really following "both Ports in back provide 1GB Speed per or only #4". However, even if I have missed something the answer should still be correct.)

Fin Q) No: if the connected device is at a lower speed (natively or by end user configuration/misconfiguration) the slower speed prevails.

Either listed switch should work if mixing manufacturer's is not of concern to you.

Still do not confuse transfer speeds with data bandwidth - other factors come into effect. You will have improvement but it most likely will not a proportional improvement.

My Mistake, the 2 Im debating are as follows:

Model: TL-SG1008D
Model: TL-SG105
