Question Switched cpu and PC not booting.

So, I switch an i7 7700 to an i7 8700k and when I tried powering the pc it didn't give any signs of life. I reseted the CMOS , then I took off the battery and put it back on , tried to reinstall it multiple times w new paste and each time no sign of power nowhere in the pc
... Help?

I would guess you have a 200 series chipset board since you have a 7700K. The 8700K requires a 300 series chipset board and the 7000 series was not supported by the 300 series chipset

The motherboard is a Pre-built ASUS ROG republic of gamer poop , the socket fits , maybe chipset yea.

The socket is 1151. Should fit and work , the i7 7700 is not a K, it;s the normal one, the 8700k is tho.

Asus prebuilts are some of the best non-botique gaming PCs.

That said, the socket may fit but the chipset might not. Intel has been on LGA 1151 as the socket size for the past 4 generations of Core CPUs (6, 7, 8 and 9). However changes in the pinout has made it so CPUs support has changes. Basically it was this:

100 and 200 ran the 6 and 7th gen

300 runs the 8th and 9th gen CPUs with a newer one for high end 9th gen the 390 series.

So most likely you have inserted a CPU into the board that is not supported. You might want to try the 7700K and hope your board is not dead.

Board aint dead, it still works w the i7 7700.

Thats good. If you want to use the 8700K you will have to buy a new board as well that has the 300 series, preferably the Z370 or Z390 chipset, chipset. Otherwise it is basically a paperweight.

And the new cpu should be fine still right? Like since it didnt boot up and was just not compatible the new i7 8700k is fine to be used on a new mobo?

The only way to know for sure is to test it in a valid working motherboard. I would assume its fine as CPUs are hard to kill but it is very possible the CPU could have been damaged.
