So i just finished building my new skylake build from switching from the AMD 6300 to the new Skylake I5, basically just used everything i already had besides my new CPU, MOBO, RAM. I used my older SSD and HDD from the prior build. My SSD had Windows 10 OS on it so when i booted up the new system with my SSD the new setup booted right up into Windows and everything like it was nothing. Just had to download my new drivers for my Gigabyte MOBO. Is this normal for it to boot right up without installing a brand new OS? Because i had also purchased a retail Windows 10 because i read that i need to start from scratch. Can anyone shed and light on this for me?

Yeah I mean so far so good, downloaded all the new drivers, Internet flies fast, and games are playing and looking incredible.

It's awesome, from what I came from, everything is super fast. Paired with my Zotac 970 xtreme core edition which is beast by the way, I can run everything on ultra. Glad I switched to the newest Intel.

Hey,
So I decided to take the plunge and switched to Skylake yesterday. Everything is working just the way i had it except if i plug in my old 7870 graphics card; I get no video from the card OR from the on-board. Everything starts up like normal though; any ideas what the problem could be?

First things first...
Is your hdmi plugged into your mobo or directly into your gpu? Also you could've got a faulty PCI where the gpu goes into... What kind of mobo did you get for 1151? Maybe try updating the drivers since it is an older gpu card. Also does your gpu show up in your BIOS? All things you can mess with to see. Maybe the PCI Express on the mobo arrived DOA. Last thing you can do is post a nice detailed message on Toms Hardware and I'm sure you'll get some help too... Let me know how it goes. Also, what CPU did you end up getting?

I got the i5 6500 AND i figured it out. The card WAS working but i needed to switch inputs on my monitor (i have a vga and a dvi port on the monitor). I've never need to switch them before but i tried plugging both outputs into each input (mobo and card). Then checked Windows which saw both and for some reason I remembered to try hitting the button and got the other display. I couldn't get the mobo to boot up with just the video card so I just set windows to display only the video card view for now.
