Hi there, I need to replace my Netgear Prosafe FS116E plus switch, Not sure what I should get. I see that the main difference is the Mbps, not sure how this make a difference. Anyone can help?
It depends what you do with your network. If you transfer files/data between devices in your house then it might make a difference. Still 100m is more than fast enough even for high def video streaming. It will likely make no difference at all for thing that are on the internet since your internet is likely much slower than the switch. That all said there is not a lot of difference in the price for a 10/100 or a 10/100/1000.
Hi Bill, thank you so much for this. Well I didn't set it up by myself. But basically we use it to split the connection over different routers among the office. People share the same connection, but do not transfer data among themselves. Does this make sense to you?
I did not look this switch up until now figuring it was a stupid unmanged switch but it appears this switch has more capabilities than the very simple ones. This device has the ability to run vlans and QoS and a few other things. If you are using any of those feature make sure any new switch will also support them.
But on your first question the speed of the ports 100m is likely fast enough for your needs.
With most computers and laptops today shipping with gigabit ethernet, I'd go with a gigabit switch (10/100/1000). If you were happy with the prosafe, stick with that model or a prosafe model that supports gigabit ethernet.
