Switching between VGA and HDMI outputs

I have a 32 inch flat screen monitor and a 50 inch flat screen television. My computer has a video card with VGA and HDMI output. I want to use the VGA output to the 32 inch monitor for when I am doing my work on the PC and use the HDMI to the 50 inch when I am streaming programming from the internet. Is there a something I need to do to activate the HDMI port? I tried hooking my Laptop directly to the 50 inch with the HDMI cable and got nothing so before I go onto the issue described I thought I might ask for help.

Yes I have and the HDMI works, but I want to be able to keep the VGA and the HDMI plugged into the video card and somehow toggle between the two. I do not want to use both monitors at the same time just want to stream programing to the TV from the computer without having to reboot every time and connect or disconnect cables. The 50 inch TV has a VGA input so maybe the simplest solution is to acquire an A/B switch that allows me to run the VGA cable from the video card to the box and then select which unit the signal goes to.
