Question Switching drive letters around

I've just switched around a bunch of drives in my computer and am in the process of properly assigning drive letters. The question I have is can I switch any drive to letter B? I have floppy drive A installed but my computer doesn't have a second power connector for B. So I want to know if I could switch my DVD drive F to B without any problems.

You can do so from Disk Management though just to keep things congruent I'd leave the alone and have the ODD as the last lettered device, i.e, if you have 5 drives and the 6th is the ODD, that the ODD is assigned H: while having drive letter assignment start from C:

Don't use A or B.

Windows treats those as floppy drives, and there are actual differences in how the OS handles those. Indexing, for instance.

The DVD? Yeah, probably.

How many drives and/or partitions are you working with?

Well in that case I'll probably leave the DVD drive as is, get a power splitter, and add in a zip drive for B.

Why the B?
Its not like you're short on drive letters.

If in some weird universe I wanted to use a Zip drive, I'd probably use the Z letter. Just because.

that was in the past, nowadays you can use them and indexing/defragmentation/trim will work just fine
windows will autoassign those letters to flopies or zip drivers (if any), but any storage can be used by those letter without anything missing

While Windows 11 may have changed that, Windows 10 and older still adhere to the old ways. Unless you have definitive proof to the contrary (and post your sources) please do not propagate potentially data damaging advice.

To the OP. A & B are not available for your intended use (Zip drives count as hard drives) just ignore them.

You are correct on that, it's been a long while since I've used one that I had forgotten that they were like that. Secondary floppy drive it is then!
