Switching from amd fx9590 to better intel cpu

I'm looking to switch to intel cpu and I don't know much about them. I want something better in performace. I've seen skylake and would not mind the switch to DDR4. Any suggestions on a good cpu that will be a good switch. I do use 4k resolution from time to timenjoy and would like to stay around $500

CPU will not benefit you in terms of graphics. You will not notice any increase in performance between your CPU and a new Intel CPU unless you're doing some intense rendering or hosting. Just save your money.

Easily doable, should be a fairly marked improvement for most applications, it will lose out in highly threaded tasks, i.e. only video editing really.

Could not agree more and on the ddr4 it is not worth the upgrade yet as he said, save your money. If you're really itching to do an upgrade you could add more ram and get the quad channel performance, or maybe a new case or peripherals.

My 2 cents It's an ugly time to do much of anything. We are smack in the beginning of several generational transitions that make spending $500 a crap shoot.

If 4k is your thing, spending that cash on a second 980ti would push you into the top 0.001% BUT over the next several months your inclination should really be figuring out a way to get the most money from SELLING your current 980ti. That's really stupid, huh?

We don't know the when, where and whys at the current time but likely by the early 3rd quarter of this year the 14/16nm AMD Polaris and nVidia Pascal discreet GPUs will be the HOT! HOT! HOT! topics of 4K gaming, and 980ti's will be old, busted and worth a whole lot less money. Having a pocket full of cash in mid-Summer (for us in the northern hemisphere, anyway) is looking like a great plan.

And, hopefully by mid-year 'DDR4' will be more mature and folks will have figured out what tweaking is necessary to see some beneficial gains over DDR3.
