Just upgraded from a NVidia TI4600 to a Sapphire 9800 Pro.
Just wondering how to best change my video drivers. Read somewhere about a program that will search out old driver files and make sure I get a clean install of the new drivers.
Any other advice would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

uninstall then use Driver Cleaner.

Here is a nice tut on it.

My personal opinion: It's worth doing a fresh install of windows.

Thanks for the quick responses !
I found that the program to clean old drivers is called "Detonator Destroyer". I was unable to find a Win XP version though. Anyone know if it exist?

Now Im thinkin of doing a new install of Win Xp. But...
every time I format and reintall Win Xp a generic driver gets loaded before i can install the driver I want.
Is there a way to disable Win XP from installing these?
Are they just a generic driver that can be over written with my new driver install? (Without having to worry about left over files)?

Sorry for all the Q's. Thanks again for your help!

The generic drivers are fine and you'll be upgrading from ATI to ATI so it won't be messy like going from Nvidia to ATI.

It's your call. I'm pretty sure there is a det destoryer for XP and you could try doing that first but if you have any problems or want to avoid any hastle, a fresh install of windows is the way to go.

"Is there a way to disable Win XP from installing these?"
Yes. It can be achieved by choosing "Safe Mode" when you are in the XP menu screen

Actually, you can X out of the driver installing when windows XP recognizes the new hardware. Just keep an eye on it, and keep Xing out and it will not install new drivers and leave you with the VGA drivers that come with windows.

Once you have aborted those attempts you should be fine to then install the drivers of your choice.

If you're looking for a Detonator Destroyer type program for XP, use <A HREF="http://www.guru3d.com/detonator-rip/" target="_new">Detonator RIP</A>, I'm not sure if they ever made an XP version of Detonator Destoyer, according to GURU3D, <A HREF="http://www.guru3d.com/detonator-destroyer/" target="_new">it's still in the works.</A>

Thanks for all the help! I just finished installing the new card. I went ahead and did a fresh install of Win XP and so far so good.
This 9800 Pro seems alot better than my old TI4600.
Any suggestions on a tweaking guide (url) on the net?
There a re so many of them, just want to find a legit one.

Thanks again for the info... everything went great!!

A good tweak guide is available from TechSpot, very straightforward;

<A HREF="http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/radeon/index.shtml" target="_new">http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/radeon/index.shtml</A>

Of course one of the best resources is the rage3D.com forums.

Some tools to get that are handy;

<A HREF="http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=733" target="_new">ATI TrayTools</A>

And a tweaked driver package (make sure you don't have two OC tools enabled at once, just a heads-up);

<A HREF="http://www.omegadrivers.net/" target="_new">OmegaDrivers.net</A>

Hope that helps.

Be careful, but not timid. :evil:
