Switching from onboard to pci-e card

Hello! First post here, and I have a question.

I'm almost done building my first computer (I've had computers before, just not ones I've built myself), and I have just one little snag left. I've searched through the forum manually and by the search button, and I could not find a thread that addresses this question.

Among other things, the computer has a gigabyte AM2 socket motherboard. The manual calls it "GA-M51GM-S2G", if that's important for solving this. It also has a Albertron GeForce 7300 video card.

Now, the problem is that the motherboard comes with an onboard video, though naturally I'd much rather use the card. The card is installed properly and everything. Its just that when I plug the monitor into the card, it gets no signal.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
 
I'm almost 100% sure that this is it. Did you disable the onboard?

Do this: Restart the computer, go into the BIOS, turn off the onboard, turn the computer off, insert card.

Thanks, but I checked the BIOS settings and it said that it would switch to any peripheral VGA it detected...

I checked the device manager, and for video adapters all it says is Geforce 6100 (that's the onboard). However, a few minutes ago I checked the card itself and it was firmly planted in the machine and everything. I just checked the card, and the fan is spinning and everything, so I assume that its all okay. So it doesn't seem that windows can even find the card. Is this card dead or something?

the onboard i mean
go to control panel
apperance and themes
display
settings

should have 2 displays
1 and 2
set the 7300 as primary

screen should go blank
then plug the video cable from
on board port
to the 7300

Go into computer managment / devise manager / display adapters. Check your onboard graphics status at bottom. disable them. Now there should be one for your new video card, make sure it is enabled and you have the latest driver for it. I hope this helps!
 
I tried everything, and it seemed that nothing worked, so I restarted the computer and finished my nights work. I turned off the computer for the night, and this morning, lo and behold, it decided that it would use the video card. So, I'm not sure which piece of advice helped, but thank you all. :)
