Solution
what you should do.

step 1 exchange pcs with eachother.
step 2 take out both graphic cards. you take the 970. he take the 770
step 3. take all hdd out of all systems. He take his hdd. you take your hdd.
step 4. back up everything.
step 5. reinstall os remember to install the correct os (e.g. if he originally used windows 7 and you originally installed windows 8, he should install windows 8, and you windows 7. put everything that was backed up back.

If that's what you want to do before everything got confused, then....
it would be our fault for not understanding. but above is what you should do.

do you mean better gpu than you or better cpu than you?

it is important.

if you want to switch cpu then your legit os will end up illegal because it is tied to the cpu/mobo.

if you want to switch gpu and nothing else then you should be fine.

Okay let me try this again lol

my dad has a i7 4790 that i want because i have a 8320 so to make it easy i plan to just switch the hdd and gpu so i don't have to take everything off ect hope that makes sense

for exaple specs are
i7 4790 gtx 770
fx 8320 and 970
and i want it to be i7 4790 gtx 970 and 8320 and gtx 770
and so me and my dad could keep our stuff i would switch the hardrives aswell

You have two VERY different systems so no you cant just swap the hard drives around and not notice anything.
You would have to do a complete reinstall of windows and all programs to go from intel to amd.

wait. let me get this straight.
you have the intel system but 770
he has the amd system but 970

so... you should take out the 970 from his and 770 from yours and exchange them.

is there a particular reason you want to exchange hdd as well? because there is no point.

you could just both reinstall os if you are afraid of driver conflicts.

Sorry for making this confusing

I have fx 8320
with a gtx 970

my dad has i7 4790
with a gtx 770

i want his i7 4790 so what i want to do is just switch the gpus between the systems and switch the hard drives as well so we could both keep our stuff
