I just got a new processor for my desktop and I want to make sure I'm doing everything right here. If I take out the old cpu, clean off the thermal paste from the fan, put the new cpu in, and than reapply thermal paste and put the fan back on. Am I doing everything right? I would also like to know if I will need to buy/need a new windows download or do anything software related.

Solution
You will not need a new Windows license.

Provided the new CPU is compatible with your current motherboard, the steps you list sound correct. You should however first verify that the current BIOS / UEFI version on the motherboard supports the new CPU before removing the working CPU. If you need to update the BIOS, do that before swapping the CPUs.

This is my current build although the mother board I have is not the micro atx version its the normal h97 which is not on pcpartpicker. The cpu there is the new one. This is the old cpu-https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EUUIWZ6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I just posted the current and new cpu and motherboard will I need to do any of these things you listed. If so how do I go about that.

My setup is very similar to yours. I upgraded from an i5 4440 to i7 4790 ( non-k).

If your BIOS is up to date you should not have any issues just dropping the i7 in.

How do I make sure my bios is up to date

Boot into the BIOS with your i5 installed, confirm the version of the BIOS. Check the BIOS version of your motherboard on the manufacturers website. But as bigpinkdragon286 mentioned, your MB should support the i7 already.

But I would update the BIOS to the latest version if it is not. That is just me.

Alright thanks for the help

Only a pleasure.
