Swordsman or Fencer?

Hey guys. I know y'all love the 'what should I be?' questions, as the
person asking is probably the only one who could answer. But I wanted
to pick up a melee prof that wasnt TK, and I couldnt decide between
the two.

I have to admit a lot of my decision is based on rpg'ng over battle
preference, though i want the prof to be good at both. I would like to
take the character in a kind of samurai type direction (been watching
to many Kurosawa movies lately). Swordsman sounds the most accurate,
yet I noticed axes and hammers being the most widely used weapons. Is
fencer any good? Thanks for any help.

Never played either. Just wanted to mention that there's no such thing as
too many Kurosawa movies!

If you want to go with sheer power, go with swordsman. There aren't a lot of
MOB's that can take down a well buffed Master Swordsman. Only negative is
that swordsman are a dime a dozen.

At the moment, Swordsman is better for PvE, and Fencer for PvP.

I've mastered fencer. It was fun. However, there are power curve
problems at the time. The good news is that you are hard to kill, but
the bad news is that killing your opponent can take a while. Swordsmen
kill far faster, but your defences aren't nearly so good.

I agree with Clawhound. I haven't tried Fencer, but have mastered
Swordsman. Swords was a blast to do, but you give up defenses for
offensive power.

Swordsman are limited to two damage types, blast (the power hammer
everybody carries), and kinetic (swords or the scythe), but almost all
(maybe not almost, could just be all) weapons are medium AP. The damage
potential is really decent, especially if you keep popping something in
the head. They start out slow, but don't seem nearly as slow or
inaccurate as Pikes to start. Speed gets crazy as you get higher, and
couple that with the scythe (if you get a good one, damage max is over
400 and speed is really low compared to the 4-5 for the other weapons)
you are a kinetic machine. The attacks are pretty decent, Area Attack2
(think thats the name... shift F-9 on my first toolbar 😛) does an area
posture down + possible dizzy. That attack is great to initiate attacks
on something like Stormies that like to kite 😉 After that, a bunch of
spin attacks takes down anything. Fun stuff.

Neither of them have a "sword" as the best weapon. A Fencers best
weapon is a stun baton and a swordsmans best weapon is a power hammer.
Swordsman also have better defences against knockdown, etc...

I am a master sword and with my 2h speed shirt I can deal about
7000-8000 damage with my Ackley Power hammer (Got a 42% damage slice
to 782MAX without powerup). You will not get that kind of sheer power
from Fencer. I actually saw a group of three Speed capped swords take
down a NS Elder in 18 seconds.

But again like someone else said it depends on what you want to do. I
guess the FOTM for PvP is Fencer/Combat Medic. If you want to go pure
PvE, so sword.

Fencer goes quite well with Doctor, as healing requires quick actions.
Fencer also goes well with professions that aren't combat or pure
combat, but want to stand up in combat better. (For instance,
Armorsmiths who want to survive the DW bunker.)
