Hello guys,

Just purchased a Synology DS1515+ (5-bays) with 5x 4TB HGST 7.2K RPM NAS drives.

I have around 1.5TB of documents and 3TB of movies, which will probably each double at the same pace over the next 3-4 years.

I really like the idea of RAID6, but don't thrust the fact that even my important documents will be spinning 24/7 to seed movie torrents

What would you do in my situation? I stick to the RAID6 configuration for all 5 drives together, or I separate them so that the documents remain in sleep mode when seeding movies. If I separate them, how to proceed and under what kind of configuration?

Thanks

If your backup strategy is good, RAID 6 really won't benefit you. What RAID 6 is protecting you from is a second failure during a rebuild. You have to decide if the probability of a second disk failure during a rebuild is worth protecting against. This is why I say, if you believe your backup strategy is good then go with Synology SHR or RAID 5.

I'll still stick to the 3-2-1 backup strategy, just trying to determine what is the best internal way to organize this array of independent disks based on this clear data separation.
