This is not an exclusively Dell question, probably more a question
related to Dell-supplied XP-Pro.

I recently purchased a Dell XPS. I am having trouble maintaining my
preferences, and am fighting what sometimes seems to be a losing battle
to keep them. I get it the way I want, and in a week or so, it's back
the way it was. For example, keeping the StatusBar in File Explorer, or
really keeping individual folder views the way I have set them.

I've got a pretty good handle on the StartUp tab of the utility, and
deselect problematical items that occasionally reinsert themselves. it
is easy to track down the programs.

In the adjacent tab, "Services", a more idiomatic name is given to the
service, and it is hard to track down what a service really is or what it
does. While some sound like they need to be there, others do not, and
yet others don't mean anything at all.

Can someone provide a pointer which would explain items like"
Volume Shadow Copy
Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)
Smart Card Helper
Smart Card
SSDP Discovery Service
Remote Access ** (several of these)
QoS RSVP
Wireless Zero Configuration
etc, etc.

I'd like to disable all the services I do not currently use. I want to
know what the implications are if I take one out. I'd like to catalog
what all of these things are so I can reinstate them if ever needed in
the future.

If someone has any pointers to links that would help shed light on the
items in the "Services" tab, I'd be very grateful. Thanks.
