I have a Volcano (system 80) and I would like to know the coil number
used to eject the ball (Ball release). On my machine, it's a A-1496, is
it the good one?

Thank you!

I have a A-16570 for the outhole (green wrapper), but I have another
one to eject the ball when a game begins, ans this one is yellow with
the number A-1496. I'm not sure that's the good one for the "eject
ball". I have problems with it (fuse F17 blowing).

Thanks!

Most System 80 games use a A-16570 for the
outhole coil. I don't own a Volcano or the manual
to double check. Should have a green wrapper.

I think in that game you need to insulate the lugs or it may ground to
something and blow the fuse. I can't remember -100%- but you might
check that out.

If Volcano is the same as BH (only Sys80 schematic I have) that coil
should be an A-16570 (same coil for the ball gate as for the outhole).
Replace it, and I believe your problem will be solved.

When I got my BH, it had A-1496's in it for both the outhole and ball
gate. Both were problems (both blew fuses, ball gate ran warm, outhole
kill a transistor on the driver board) until I replaced them with the
correct coils (A-16570). No problems whatsoever since.

My theory is that since the A-1496 was the most common coil for
Gottleibs of the era, slack-ass repairmen only bothered carrying that
coil. So any coil that got replaced was replaced with an A-1496.

The problem is that an A-1496 has a nominal resistance of only 2.95
ohms, whereas an A-16570 has a nominal resistance of 15.5 ohms. Ergo,
if an A-1496 is placed in the ball gate circuit, it will draw over 5
times the current it was designed to (and thus blow a lot of fuses).

So, get yourself an A-16570. And while your at it, buy a
manual/schematic for your game--much good info in them.

Thank you Darren for all your informations. I hope that's the solution
to my problem. Now, I just have to buy a coil. I think ebay is the only
place I can get one. Here in Quebec City, a pinball seller sale coils
between 30$ and 40$. That seems a lot to me compared to the ones I
found on ebay. I'm new in pinball, so I don't know the prices yet.

I ordered my manual and schematics a few days ago, waiting for it!

Thank youy again, give you some news when I'll receive and install my
coil.

$30-40 Canadian... let's see... that's about 75 cents US, right? 🙂

Most coils tend to run 5-10 USD. I expect there are at least a couple
of on-line Canadian pinball parts retailers... but I don't know any
URLs. I'm sure some US-based outfits would gladly ship to you... but I
don't know if the international shipping would exceed the premium
charged by your local pinball retailer.

While you're at it, heed Rokola's advise, and make sure the lugs on new
coil you install doesn't short out on anything nearby (as I recall,
it's a bit cramped under there).
