TLDR AT BOTTOM

So my problems started randomly and have been a long annoying journey. Initially my setup worked fine for about 4 months, this was put together October 2022. I had not touched a single setting in my bios except to enable resizable bar because I didn't want to push any of my components.

Sometime in January, while doing some machine learning I watched my computer blackscreen, (this was in ubuntu on my main ssd), It did the classic black screen full fans thing, the lights on my gpu stayed on. It then wouldn't boot, only the white led light came on, so I turned my pc off, flipped the psu off, and held the power button. This still didn't work after 20 minutes, than after an hour of being off than after a full night. I then took all my components out and then took out my cmos battery. Only after doing this did the pc boot, doing mundane tasks though such as being on google, (now i was on windows 11 on a different ssd) would still blackscreen my computer.

So I thought okay maybe it's gpu overheating, so now i have my fans on always 80% and have a boxfan on my pc. This helped significantly, but still at a certain point my computer would blackscreen. It always involved being at or near full gpu load though. So I tried to downclock things, it had no real effect, I reapplied thermal paste to my gpu and to my cpu. This did help temps but didn't seem to affect the issue. I should've kept a comprehensive list of all of the things i did, but along the way I put my power limit at 60%/50% for my gpu, and this largely stopped the problem. I could no longer get it to crash from playing a game or doing furmark benchmark. It would sometimes randomly restart though instead of the normal black screen full fans.

I then tested my gpu in my brother's set up. I never had a single issue no black screens nothing, until i updated the nvidia geforce driver and then the problem started and constantly crashed. So i downgraded it and then it worked perfectly again. So back into my own set up, I realized my ubuntu driver was always the old one and after downgrading my windows 11 driver, it now never black screens unless i run furmark, or something equally intensive, normally though Total War Warhammer 3 on lowest settings was still enough to make it blackscreen. I had also in the past tested an extra power supply by hotwiring it, so i had 650 watts for my gpu and 750 watts for my computer overall. That still didn't work so i tried the extra power supply alone and that still didn't work.

I proceeded to try every combination of cord plugged into different ports using both power supplies. It never worked. Running a cpu benchmark also never makes the computer blackscreen. I had also tried every combination of my ram sticks, so one in port 1 2 3 4 and then stick 2 in port 1 2 3 4 and then both sticks in every configuration. I now tried an old stick of ram a 2666 mhz one, it still blackscreened in port 1 and 2 but for some reason in port 3 it took longer to blackscreen like double the time. Idk if that's a fluke or what.

I can run benchmarks and use gpuz or hwinfo to get results if anyone wants to check those out. Thank you for even reading this overly long post. I really hope someone has some good insight to help. Also most of the recent blackscreens, such as the one i just had while running furmark, don't result in fans going to 100% just blackscreen, but the gpu lights and pc lights all stay on the display goes dark.

TLDR:
  • I have a PC with Ryzen 7 5800x, RTX 3090, 32GB RAM, 750W PSU, and two SSDs one NVME ssd with Ubuntu, one standard ssd with Windows 11.
  • My PC blackscreened with full fans while running machine learning on Ubuntu and wouldn’t boot until I removed the cmos battery, after fully powering down and reconnecting all components.
  • My PC still blackscreens randomly on Windows 11 even with high fan speed and boxfan on it, but this seems to help. Lowering the power limit of my gpu to 60%/50% also helped but it sometimes restarts instead.
  • I tested my gpu in another PC and it worked fine until I updated the nvidia driver. Then it started restarting and was fixed by downgrading the driver.
  • I downgraded driver on my own pc and it helped but not fixed the issue.
  • GPU temp reading at 61C Memory Junction temp at 88C CPU temp at around 65C when crashes occur.
  • Furmark causes restarts/blackscreens but not consistently, sometimes it works fine. Cpu stress tests never cause blackscreen or restarts.
Any Ideas as to what would be causing this? Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you for taking your time to look at this post.

Is am having the same issue and almost have an identical build. I figured out the fans being at 100% help prevent the issue. I was thinking this may be a power supply issue although unlikely. I am upgrading to a 1000Watt so I'll let you know how it goes in a few days.

I RMA'd because my card apparently had more than one problem. So i got the new GPU and am already experiencing the same problem to a lesser degree, less overheating now and just the crashing. I'm thinking it could be software related but not really sure. Did you ever fix your issue?
