Just a simple system check for you guys in the know. I wasn't able to get the GPU I wanted at the time due to shortage etc. And it was suggested that the i5 12600K was the best price at the time unless I as going i9. I currently have the following specs and just wanted to get input from the pros as to where I stand. Again my inquiry is more aligned to CPU, GPU and operating system.

You should've passed on a PCPartPIcker listing of ease of manipulation. You might want to think about a 2x32GB DDR4-3600MHz ram kit instead of 4 sticks of ram, since that would add undue stress on the memory controller. The rest of the system looks fine though you're missing the case to hold all of the parts inside it.

You talked about the gpu, so do you have the 3060 already or is that a theoretical card for you?

You may consider looking at AMD socket am5 as AMD is supposed to support am5 through 2027. So it may be a consideration since you may later be able to drop a new CPU into the board you’ll be buying today.

In what way might your pc be lacking for what you want to do? I felt I went with the GPU that was readily availible rather than one that would be the best or my system. I felt the same with the CPU at the time.

Ok I see. So you already own this system. If you’re gaming, what resolution are you at? The 3060 may be getting a little long in the tooth for 1440p. So that’s something you could look at. You could also toss a new i7 in if you have money to burn.

I was in a similar situation a month or so back and ended up building a ryzen 5 7600x3d box but the 12600kf I had at the time could have gone a couple more years easily. But at least I’m repurposing old parts for my wife’s replacement home office pc.

I would not upgrade to a 13th or 14th gen. I know Intel has claimed to fix the issues with them, but I am not sure it is worth the risk, unless you keep the 12600k in case you have to RMA said 13th or 14th gen. Regardless, a 13700 isn't really going to be noticeably faster than a 12600k, with a especially with a 3060, and the resolution being used.

There isn't even a 10% difference with a 3080, at 1080p, vs the slightly faster 13700k. The degredation issues, and the pitiful performance gains are why I am still using my 12700k.

I agree. I had a 12th gen setup but I heard about some of the issues and ended up swapping to an am5 setup and am passing my old board along with an i5 12400 to my wife for her home office pc.
