System compatability - CPU

Hi,

I'm currently using a very old laptop with Chrome OS installed. I've replaced the RAM (2GB DDR2 @ 667 MHz). I also replaced the 120GB HDD with a 32GB SSD. It's made a huge difference but I'd also like to get a replacement CPU. It currently has a Intel® Celeron® M Processor 440 @ 1.86GHz. According to Intels page, my laptop supports these sockets: PBGA479, PPGA478.

This CPU was released in 2006 and I'm pretty sure I've found a CPU from 2011 with the same socket, so would it work if I was to replace it?

A few things you need to consider:

1) BGA is soldered to the motherboard. PGA is a socket. If your chip is the BGA variant, it cannot be replaced.

2) Any CPU you replace it with must have the same or lower TDP

3) Any CPU you replace it with must have support from the laptop's BIOS or it will not be recognized.

Your best bet is to google that specific laptop and see what people have installed in it successfully. Just because it fits, doesn't mean it'll boot.
