I just swapped my 2010 HP Pavilion p6516f to a new case. This case came with a front mounted intake fan, and after connected I get "system fan has failed" error. The fans are working just fine, all running. I've looked in other threads but don't see a straight forward solution for this. I reset CMOS and it didn't help. Any suggestions?

Solution

Go to the bios, and change the fan settings from there, Your motherboard is thinking that CPU fan is not connected, so using the bios, select the fan that is connected to the cpu cooler as the CPU fan, this may take some trial and error.

Tried this and BIOS is posting the CPU fan just fine. I think it has something to do with this new fan. It is plugged in on a fan prong that has never been used before. I could disable the system fan monitor, but if something goes wrong I will be SOL. Is this about the only solution? It is either that or press F2 every time I boot.

Wait you say the fan is plugged in a different location, maybe thats the problem, try connecting the fan to the CPU fan header on the motherboard. If that doesn't work just disable the fan monitor, its not really necessary. if the fan does stop work, your computer will overheat and hopefully will give you a bluescreen and force you to shut it down.

No, the CPU fan is plugged into its original location. The rear fan is also plugged into its original location. The only one that is different is the new front intake fan. They are all running perfectly fine, I just get the error message on boot. Disabling the fan monitor seems to be the best solution. Thanks Mojo!
