I need to take an old server 2008 R2 system and virtualize it to retain some legacy apps. I've never run a virtualization system before. I'm a little confused about some things. I'm assuming I need a type 1 hypervisor to retain performance. The OS is 64 bit but has an important 32 bit web app which must run. The system has a copy of EaseUS backup which has a feature that converts backups to vm files. I would like to virtualize this server so that it will run on new hardware without driver problems, etc. and can be scaled to redundant servers. I dont really want to spend big bucks on the latest 2021 server OS just to run the older version virtualized. Is there a way to do thisn without host OS? Can I use a linux box for example? Or a Win7? Once I start the VM will I have access to the full server GUI? And are there prebuilt boxes without Win10 OS that would be suitable?
