System haunted by lockups

I think my CASE may be haunted. I have totally new hardware, AMD XP64 4800, 2 gig DDR 400, ASUS A8N-SLI-Premium MB, two 250 gb SATA drives connected to the NVIDIA Controller (one of the two SATA controllers on the MB). Radeon X1800 GTO (1 card, not two). No other cards installed right now. Also, 300 GB ATA drive on MB PATA i/f, then DVD-RW on secondary master PATA, and DVD-RAM D/L on seconday slave PATA.

Thats it. Nice super zahlman cooler (Temp not factor). Not overclocked, or anything. Old computer was experiecing lockups, AMD XP 2800 or something, can't recall. New install of XP SP2. Even P/S is new, as needed the new 24 pin power supply cable connection.

Under moderate to heavy hard disk I/O, computer will LOCK. HARD. Usually IDE lights are steady on. Sometimes, before the lock, GUI will begin to act a tad squirrely, other times, no warning. Just gone. Since this lastest reinstall, I am occasionally get a BDSO, Machine Check Exception. This is new, since lastest reinstall.

Old computer was exhibing similar behaviour which is one reason I upgraded. However, how this can be following me around with all new hardware (or old hardware, such as DVD-RW disconnected) is beyond me. Maybe its a new problem, I don't know. I've applied all possible patches and drivers that I can find for windows and the hardware (video, chipset, BIOS) etc. Nothing helps. I do once in a while notice a video "flicker", not sure what that is, but never coincides with a lockup. Was running dual monitors, but thats not it as this happened before I added second monitor too.

I don't know what could be going on, so I'm asking for help. I've built FAR more computers that I care to count (hundreds), and I've had some reall SOB's, but this one, defies any attempts at understanding. What else is there to try? Am "I" possessed?

I've probably forgotten a detail or two, so just ask. Also, sometimes this thing will run for several days, then like today, about 5 times so far.

HELP!!!111 :)

which drive is your o/s installed on, the SATA or the ATA
judging by your physical memory, your page file has to be at least 3gb so make sure it is and you have enough free disk space

can you provide the bsod crash code #

SATA. LOTS of free disk space (drives are 250 gb)

I've just pulled memory, etc. no change. WILD GUI flashes and then lockups. Stop code is 0x0000009C

I just removed Nvidia drivers and am using standard MS IDE controller drivers now. There really is nothing left to try....?

Nope, XP Pro 32 bit. No lockups yet since driver change to generic ms IDE drivers, however getting an oddity all of teh sudden built in ethernet adapter going "deaf", disabling and renabling fixes it, twice now. Need a reboot to check it out...but never did that before. May or may not be related.
