System info build and update version never match

When I type "version" in Cortana (Win10), it brings up a system information window. That version never matches the Win upgrades. My desktop shows build 16299 and settings shows version 1709. My Surface shows build 17134 and version 1803. Will version and build never match?

Yes, that's absolutely normal and the way it's supposed to be.

Version 1803, Build 17134.48 is exactly what my system is.

1803 is the major version, 17134.48 is the specific build. Before long, that will increment to 17134.SomethingElse.

In the Fall, 1803 will change to something else as well.

I guess a secondary question would be why doesn't system info give the windows version? Build is less useful if you're not a developer. Any thought?

At a command prompt, type 'winver'.
That gives both.
