Hey guys,

I've been experiencing a major slowdown on my PC as of late. At first I thought it might be RAM because memory was running high, I ran a memory diagnostic and there were no errors (not sure if this is related). I am running 8gb RAM with available memory at 3.49gb. I check my computer yesterday and I find that now my CPU is maxed out. In system information it says 1 core, 1 logical processor. However, in the device manager it shows all four cores. I had read that uninstalling the processor in the device manager would fix the issue but no such luck. I'm wondering if reinstalling windows is my only option from here but I want to exhaust all other options if possible.

Currently, I am running no anti-virus (just uninstalled) and am running 50% CPU load with only 1 page open in chrome. 43% memory. Any help would be appreciated!

Solution
System Idle is normal. Thats when the CPU has nothing to do.

However only seeing one CPU is not normal. I have a work bench with an i7 4790 and it shows all 8 threads available.

The only other thing you can try is to update the BIOS and the reset to defaults. Do you know what motherboard you have?

Windows 10. I tried to update the drivers in device manager yes, but it said they were up to date for the CPU. I've never updated the ME drivers (not manually anyway). Honestly i'm not quite sure how. I was able to find detection tools online, would I just download and run those?

Unfortunately i'm not sure it fixed the problem. After a couple restarts (one after each install) i'm still seeing significant CPU spikes. Between 97% and 100% even after being on for about 10 minutes with little to no activity

Under details I show System idle process, jumping between 78 and 92 followed by chrome at between 8 and 11. More concerning, when i set affinity to chrome, which is using the most memory my only 2 options are All processors and CPU 0. As a quad core, shouldn't I have more options available?

Its a Asus z97 pro. I may have just fixed the problem though.

In start I typed in Run
msconfig
boot tab
advanced options

and the box for "number of cores" was checked and locked at 1. Not sure how or when that happened but I'm now looking at 7% CPU load. Thanks for your time Jimmy!
