system is slow during installation too

This is not a windows XP problem, but since i'm installing it I decided to put my question in here :

I have an old Compaq nx9420 laptop that had a malfunctioning hard drive.
So I decided to replace it with a new one : Western Digital Sata 2,5" - 5400rpm - 320GB.

I'm now installing a total new windows XP OS and I already see that the system reacts very slow.
During installation the windows open very slowly, installation is taking longer then normal, ...

What else could be wrong with this laptop that I can check?

A 5400RPM hard drive will work slow, no surprise there. Should have bought a 7200RPM hard drive or an SSD.

The one that was in it was a Fujitsu 120 GB - 5400rpm and the system worked faster. That I'm sure of.

So there is something else wrong too. 🙁
