i need some ideas on how to go abt diagnosing why my pc randomly freezes. sometimes it will rund for a week or more and other times it will freeze multiple times in a row just after startup. but it usually does it when i try to load a game or download something. if i can get the game launched then it doesnt give me a bit of trouble but getting games to launch is a nightmare. i have a psu tester and it says that my psu is fine. and i have run chkdsk and come up with nothing, and i have run memtest for 12+ hours with no problems. it will do it whether i have my system overclocked or not. and i dont have a video card that i can use to test.. is there something that i can use to test my gpu? any help would be much appreciated.

The problem may be your HDD. Do u see your HDD LED light up for a long time instead of flashing when your rig freezed? Chkdsk may do some basic check, but I think u'd better get a HDTune Pro to do a complete sweep. If any bad sector found, your HDD is sentenced death and u may need to change a brand new HDD.

Here is the site: http://www.hdtune.com/ Just download the pro version and u could try for a 15-day period (but technically several hours for u just to get result)

Make sure your motherboard bios is up to date. Run Cpuz check that the mb set your ram speed and voltage right. If your running an intel mb check that you have xmp profile turned on. In the bios check that the mb set to standard speed not turbo or performance mode.

im running hdtune now. ive never noticed my light stay on b4, mainly bc i have just been too pissed off that it frezzes to even look or care. and my bios is up to date and all of my voltages and speeds are correct.

That's why I made such judgement. Try another way: load default or fail-safe settings of your BIOS and shut down any overclocking of your PC. Or use another HDD to try to prove me wrong on the HDD issue.

So I hate to say that I still insist my view that HDD is the one who cause the problem.

There are still ways to test/examine and I want u to describe what was going on.

1. Run HD tune again, but this time no test. Just select "Health" tab and find out if there is any value which highlighted in yellow / red color. If so, I was right.

2. If step 1 shows nothing, Launch a game or copy game folder in your disk. If freezes, listen to the rig and tell me if there is any strange sound, and look at the HDD light to make sure if it is still on for a long time (Usually if no problems the light should flash or the lightness should varies) or isn't light on at all (Means at that moment the HDD won't work).

The PSU, CPU, RAM, and GPU should be no problem. Otherwise ur rig would run into BSOD or black screen often.

If u have time, record the video of your screen when freezes and send me a link. That would help too.

And highlighted by yellow or red? I thought that may be the answer. This error indicates there are errors of the SATA port communication, and that may cause your rig freeze occasionally cause data couldn't send between your HDD and other components. It's a start of a dying HDD but the progress is slow.
