system lock-ups

Hi All:
I spoke to Gateway technical support about a week ago regarding my system
locking up when opening programs - specifically MS Works, Printshop and
Outlook Express. They came to the conclusion that I didn't have enough RAM.
I ordered more and installed it - now have 192 MB of RAM. It is installed
and system resources says I have that amount of RAM. Seems like the
programs that do work open faster but still have system lock-up on trying to
open Outlook Express and Printshop. MS Works is opening right now but that
might start locking up after a while too.

Their other suggestion was to reformat the hard drive - which I am not crazy
at all about doing. Does anyone out there have any other suggestions?? I
am just trying to get rid of this computer and give it to a relative but I
don't want to give it to them full of bugs.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Kay

Hi All:
As an update to my previous post - I just tried changing my color settings
from 16 bit to 256 colors and this allowed me to open all programs. Changed
it back to 16 bit color and I can still open all programs. This seems to
point to RAM memory problem also I would say but I don't understand this
because I have cleaned up a lot of stuff on my computer and deleted
pictures, files, etc. It used to work fine with only 64 MB of RAM so it
seems like there definitely shouldn't be any lock-ups with 192 MB of RAM
now.

Any insight into this?

Thanks,
Kay

Kay:

Remove the 64 MB stick and see if the problem persists.
If so then reinstall the 64 MB stick and try uninstalling and reinstalling
the offending programs.

Thanks - problem solved. Took out the 64 MB chip completely and now the
system works perfect - no lock-ups.
