The used space in my system partition is 72.5GB in a new HP computer. I can account for around 50GB after checking hidden folders (part is a Windows.old folder of 22.8GB) but how do I find what uses the other 20GB?

Hey there, B D Beggs.

Usually in similar cases, more often than not, the thing that's eating up your space turns out to be system restore points. However you'd have to check that for yourself in order to be sure. Try out the suggestions from this article: http://www.howtogeek.com/125923/7-ways-to-free-up-hard-disk-space-on-windows/ and more importantly the one which offers a way to analyze your disk space and the last one about system restore.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how it goes and if you have any questions.

Thanks for your prompt reply. The computer is less than a month old and it has two restore points. I understand that Microsoft will remove the Windows.old folder a month after update/upgrade although you can use Disk Cleanup if you are in a hurry. I installed WinDirStat on both the HP computer and my main computer. The main computer's C drive uses 21.9GB (and has more programmes installed), the HP uses 79.4GB. I did a clean install on the main computer and the salesman said the HP had a clean install as well. I doubt that to be true. One additional folder WinDirStat listed for the HP is Recovery using 11.9GB which is a puzzle. The "Recovery Image" in the D drive uses 16.1GB so I don't understand why there is a Recovery folder in C. Another variation is that the Windows folder in the main computer is 13.0GB whereas the HP is 19.4. I run Ccleaner on a regular basis and use Disk Cleanup from time to time.I will wait to see what happens after the Windows.old folder is deleted early next month but I guess I will still be annoyed with the huge variation between the two computers.
