System question - crashes to desktop

In the last 10 days my system has crashed to desktop almost
every time I get into a combat situation. I get the generic
error message "this program has performed an illegal function".

I have updated all drivers, uninstalled UO and reinstalled,
defraged and looked for any kind of errors in my system.

My system is about 3 years old now, but its not a snail.
I have a NVIDIA GeForce 2Pro vid card, 512 mb of Ram
72% free. I have 7GB free on the C drive.
I am still running Win 98 until I update this
system, all updates to Win 98 have been made.
I have directX9.something. (latest version) I have a good DSL connection.
(not over crowded, only 4 connections on this sub-station).
Other games work find.

BTW, I play UO in 2D. 3D runs like a snail on my system. (and I hate
the 3D graphics anyway).

Any ideas of what I should check next, or is this one of EA's
built in bugs from the last few weeks?

Are you using Archery? There's an Archery crash bug that they're said
will be fixed in the next publish. My archer has had it happen once
but I don't remember any system messages.

If I get back first, let me know that I'm

That's interesting, I had not heard about the Archery bug.
One character is an archer, but the other one is a Paladin, (swords).
It even crashed on my Tamer, but the nightmare took care of the
monster while I was trying to get back on-line.

This just started for me, about 10 days ago. Before that, I have had
few complaints about crashes for over a year, maybe longer.

Where did you read about the Archery crash bug ? My GF has had the same
problem Ice have had lately, she crashes very often, always in battle, and
at the moment she is fighting ancient wyrms and dragons in Destard with an
Archer so she dies alot at the moment....

I heard about it months ago. One of the developers actually was asking
for Event Viewer logs from people who suffered such crashes so they could
try and narrow it down but this was 2-3 months ago. It happened to me
most in crowded areas like the Ogre Lord level of Despise. Not only did
my client crash when my own archer fired arrows but also when others fired
them. Not every time - just enough to be annoying. I quit using my own
archer until it is fixed.

That's a weird one...my archer has been my most active character since
before the (regular) promises to fix the bug, and I can't recall ever
crashing like has been said. Maybe because I'm running XP pro? It seems a
LOT more stable than 98(either edition). Having said that, it regularly
closes 3D when I log out.

Have you run DXdiag or whatever it's called? Maybe one of your driver files
has become corrupted. I used 98 for about 4 years, and found I had to wipe
and reinstall roughly every 9 months for no apparent reason. Easy if you
have a second drive, but if not, it's a PITA. I remember something about
people having to revert to older Nvidia drivers a couple of years ago when
the Geforce 3 came out, but I can't remember whether it was UO that was
affected :) Anyway, if it's been fine so far it can hardly be that, so
forgive this odd stream of semi-technical musing!

I left UO last spring for a few months and went to DAoC. I had to go back to
an earlier Geforce driver (They gave me it's version number over the phone)
to get the origonal release version of DAoC I had to work

I also use XP Pro. Chose it over Home edition do to the fact that Pro just
flat out runs more stable. A friend of mine I know does IT work and has a
Masters degree in computer science. He told me to go with pro when I got my
new computer. Took his word for it considering his back ground. But for the
curious. Intel P4 3.01Ghz 800Mhz frontside bus. 1 gig DDR ram. Nvdia 256MB
DDR video card. Sound Blaster Live audio. Duel 120gig HDs. Cable net
connection. :)
