Question System randomly dies on boot or 10 minutes after boot ?

Hi all! Since a few weeks, my PC seems to randomly boot with no display or sound (no BIOS logo or Windows). I have to manually shut it down and reboot. It can take a try or two but then it boots up fine, no other issues. This can also happen about 10 minutes after boot; but has so far *NOT* happened past 10 mins. So my PC can be on all day, in use, gaming etc. and be fully fine.

I have not made any hardware changes since changing my GPU 2 years ago. System/case itself is from 2015 tho. So could be EoL for PSU or Motherboard? Would like to make sure tho before replacing anything.

What I can make out from System error logs is just a bunch of "System unexpectedly shut down" errors.
  • OS Name - Microsoft Windows 10 Home
  • System Model - MS-7821
  • BIOS Version/Date - American Megatrends Inc. V2.6, 24/12/2014
  • PSU - Cooler Master B600 V2 600W
  • Processor - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz, 4001 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
  • GPU - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060
  • 16 GB RAM
  • 300 GB SSD
  • 2 TB HDD
Getting a few more cleaning supplies just in case a deeper clean is needed.

Any ideas?

What makes you think a deeper clean will fix anything? If you polish and wax your car, does it fix a faulty engine? Unless your CPU/GPU cooler fan and heatsink are clogged with a thick layer of crud, concentrate on something else.

This link points to your PSU being a low quality unit. If you bought it in 2015, swap it for something newer and better quality.

Thanks. I was just thinking maybe there's some more dust inside the PSU or some such, as I ran out of compressed air earlier.

So you think it's most likely a PSU problem? The components inside still have power when screen goes/stays black (like GPU, fans, drives).

If so, I'll look into getting a Corsair 750x maybe. Better than upgrading MB anyway.

The PSU is just one likely culprit. Unless you have a sophisticated tester complete with electronic loads, the easiest way to check the PSU is to temporarily replace it.

It is also possible you have a faulty mobo, or CPU or RAM. Without sitting in front of the computer with a stack of replacement parts, it's not easy to tell which one has failed.

Are you overclocking the RAM or the CPU or the GPU? If so disable all overclocks.

If you have a spare GPU, try it in place if the 3060. It's handy to have another PC you can "borrow" parts from or test components in.

Hi, try to test with other power source , and also verify if you have latest bios , latest updates for windows and video card , also you can check the compatibility between mb and video card , but first try with a different Power source and see if the sistem is stable or not , and let me know , hope will help you.

After some days of trouble shooting, I found out these issues seem to occur often when messing with my dual monitor setup or even specifically their audio sources.

Normally I don't use my monitor speakers, and use external speakers instead. Since getting a PS5 a few months ago, I had been switching a monitor or the ext speakers to it, back and forth. This would break the dual monitor setup and default sound settings, maybe causing issues on next boot.

This gave me the idea to disable all the sound sources on the pc (like on monitors, controllers, etc) except the ext speakers. I also try to boot up the pc AFTER turning on the monitors and speakers.

It's been about a week now, and so far I haven't had any issues yet.

If it happens again, I'll come back and post that this wasn't it. But so far, it seems to at least be helping the system be more stable.

Also, ty for the tips! :)
