[SOLVED] System Randomly Shutting down when playing games, and sometimes even when using 3D apps ?

Hello all,

my computer off lately shuts down randomly (sometimes immediately as soon as I launch a game or sometimes hours/minutes later into a game) I am unable to figure out what is the problem that's causing this reboot

Recently by that, I mean (it's Six months now) I put together a CPU. This problem has been occurring for the last week.

One thing to note in this is, once the pc shuts down automatically it takes a couple of minutes sometimes 10 minutes to Boot again (trying to boot the computer gives no response whatsoever during this time)

MY PC Configs are as follows

Processor: Ryzen 9 5950x

MOBO : MPG B550 GAMING PLUS

Graphics Card: AMD RX 570 8GB DDR5

RAM: 2 Sticks - Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (1x16GB) DDR4 3600MHz C18 Desktop Memory

SMPS: Cooler Master MWE 550 80plus 230v

Hard Drives - 1 SSD (Samsung) and 2 SATA Drives 3.5inch 5400rpm)

Let me know if any more details are needed so that I can add it

I am trying to figure out a way I can share the logs of the Openhardware monitor, Will update it here as soon as I find a way

For now I have shared it via google drive link : https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1vTHEEN4VPgWjP-bHHGqpCOdzX32smtZi?usp=sharing

This random shutdown and reboots are happening only for the last week. and I haven't done any new hardware changes after putting the pc build

Please assist :)

Thank you!

Solution
This fixes it .. I hope so...so far a day(8hrs of gaming) elapsed with heavy gaming no issues...

Although the Rams were from the same brand, the versions were different.

The Rams versions of stick with one being 3.43 and another 3.44

  • Initial Ram Setup - A2 with 3.44v RamStick and B2 with 3.43V Stick - Shutdowns were occuring randomly
  • Connecting only one ram and gaming .. no issue..and no Shutdown didnt try extensively for prolonged time.20mins max with each stick
  • Connected 3.43v in A2 and 3.44 Ramstick in B2 .. Works fine so far no restart ..

SMPS: Cooler Master MWE 550 80plus 230v
You have the wrong PSU for the job. Try and source(borrow, not buy) a reliably built, branded 650W unit and see if the issue persists. To also add, your system isn't exactly balanced, considering you spent well towards the motherboard, processor and ram.

Yeah been planning to buy an RTX 3060 and an 850w SMPS. Would that make them parts complement each other?

What buggers me in this is that once the system shuts down.. it takes a while before I can boot it back up. I just need to leave it for a while (read a book or check my mobile for sometime and try again after sometime before it boots normally)=_= I checked if its a heating issue it's not

Wattage isn't the only thing you look for when buying a PSU, mind you. You might also have a grounding issue among other things, or so it seems to me...or the fact that your PSU's unable to power the rig and needs cooling down(which isn't good either).

I checked if its a heating issue it's not
And how did you do that?

By using multiple approaches
  1. Observing the temps from the open hardware monitor log file for both the CPU and GPU after the crash and successful boot CPU temps are around 70s when gaming and GPU at 50-60s
  2. Sometimes even after a couple of hours it doesn't boot up (so definitely not a heating issue at least for the bootup)
  3. Good old-fashioned and stupid method to see how hot the GPU pipes / CPU heat sink is when Shutdown occurs. I can touch them and not too hot like I need to take my hands off ( I know stupid way and no actual result but wasn't that hot)
Thanks a lot mate your discussions are actually helpful. I think I might be able to pinpoint and resolve this soon. I ll try to borrow an SMPS better than mine and check. Also have an Electrician check for Earthing issue in the Wall point for my computer

One other thing to point out is I ran the CineBench app to stress CPU render times and no crash whatsoever. and Ran Heaven Benchmark 4.0 for GPU stress no crash - Left it for an hour running. After a while, I booted up WOW, and boom a shutdown in a minute.

Another thing I observed among many tests is

Once the PC boots I can play games without a shutdown on low graphics, increasing the graphics causes a shutdown soon enough. I thought oh this is a GPU issue.

But the computer doesn't turn on after that until I unplugged and replugged the power cables which made me think the power cable is kaput or faulty and needed replacement - so could be a power cable issue

After a couple of replugging in and out with the new power cable, the computer Turns on and works fine with low graphics, increasing graphics makes it shut down and refuse to boot until I fiddle with cables(Plugging them out and IN) which makes me think its the SMPS the culprit.

I am trying to source a GPU and SMPS from known people around lets see which works and which doesnt.

Keeping the thread updated so that anyone following it or having the same issue has some leads on stupidity I have tried and solutions I have come up with.
