System recovery on toshiba laptop will not work.

I have a relative with a toshiba laptop and recently when it boots up, it comes to a black screen and it says "disk read error" (there's a little more but I gotta go see it again). When she tries to boot the on disk system recovery it says the same, and when she runs the recovery CD/DVD it will have a windows loading bar then just sit on a black screen with a working mouse cursor.

Help would be appreciated and if more hardware, or system message information is needed just ask.

Update- Model number is Toshiba satellite p505-s8980

Update 2- The full message for the disk read error is "A disk read error has occurred press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to restart"

Sounds like the harddrive is dead or on it's last leg, you will have to install a new drive and reinstall windows
