[SOLVED] System restarts randomly. Trying to find out why.

Hello everybody,
first of all: huge thanks to everybody who sacrifices time to help, appreciate it!

Here is my problem: my PC restarts at random times and I have no clue as to why he is doing it. I am no specialist with PCs and my knowledge is kind of limited.
Here are the facts I have observed:

• Restarts happen randomly, sometimes while playing graphic heavy games, sometimes just using the webbrowser with no big programms running in the background, sometimes even directly after a restart, without any input.
• Sometimes it doesnt happen for hours, sometimes twice in succession
• Sometimes the cooler vents seem to work harder shortly before and after he restarts, but not always.

What I have tried already:

• Updated Graphics Driver
• Updated BIOS Version
• Run a RAM-Test - no problems detected
• Run dxdiag - no problems detected
• Windows 10 is updated

My system consists of:

• AMD Ryzen 5 3600X
• TUF B450-PLUS GAMING Motherboard
• GeForce RTX 2070S, 8GB GDDR6 / Palit
• 16 GB Ram (RAM DDR4-RAM - 8GB 3000MHz G.Skill Aegis x2)
• SPM SSD M.2 PCIe 2280 - 1000GB Intel 660p
• 600W BoostBox PB 600 Power Boost 80+ Gol
• be quiet! Pure Rock

Any ideas or hints as to what to try next are highly appreciated.

Hey there,

Well, typically issues like this point to a PSU related problem.

Your PSU doesn't seem to be very well recognised. In all my time on this forum, I've never seen that brand. Having checked on the web, there isn't a single review I can find. That leads me to believe, that's it's possibly a poor unit.

I'd recommend getting a 'good quality, reputable' brand unit. There are many available. PSU's like Corsair RMx/RMi/TXM, Seasonic Focus Plus Gold, EVGA G2/G3, Superflower Leadex are all really good brands, with 7-10 year warranty and are made of quality components.

I'd start there.

Edit: Actually, I found this: 80-Plus-Gold power supplies up to 110 Euro in the test - ComputerBase

I was afraid it could be something more severe. The PC was a pre-assembled one, so they probably saved a couple of euros on the PSU. Its also the part I know the least about concerning PCs. I took a look into the Corsair options you mentioned and the TX650M looks like a nice budget option. Going to do a bit more research on the other options. Is there something specific I should look out for when purchasing the PSU?

hey I'm having the same problem did u manage to find out what's been causing this?

btw i had a corsair power supply for 5+ years and i never had a problem with it yet so I would recommend you buy a corsair power supply(this is from my personal experience with corsair PSU's only!)

Sorry for late reply. Well, looking at the brand and model is most important. Not all Gold rated units are made equally. The aforementioned brands use quality Jap capacitors, higher quality fans (fluid dynamic bearing or rifle bearing), better FETS, among a whole range of components.

I myself am just an enthusiast and like reading up on most tech, so my knowledge is basic, but growing!

The TXM is a great budget option. Should suit your build well. A note of caution. If you plan on upgrading to RTX3xxx, you might consider a different PSU, maybe the RMX/RMi. The reason being is that even some really good PSU's have trouble with those cards due to the super fast switching frequencies and changes in load. They sometimes trip their overprotections Sadly the TXM is one of those which seem to have that issue. Some do work fine, others not. Just something to keep in mind.

also, sorry for the late reply. I have not yet tried to change the PSU, so the problem is still ongoing. Nothing else I have tried worked (changing power setting etc.) so PSU really seems like that last possible reason. Lets hope it will work,

@keith12 just a quick update, new PSU TX650M arrived today, installed it and at least I did nothing wrong, PC still works Will report if that fixed my problem.

@keith12 well, at first, and still, I have the feeling that the system runs a lot smoother, and the restarts happen less often. But just a couple of minutes ago, it did it again, blackscreen while browsing. Nothing I could do but press the restart button. will keep reporting.

now that you mention it i realize how stupid it was of me to not really differentiate between the two of them. But yes, only 2 freezes until now. Probably a bit early but I still feel the overall situation is getting much better. No returning to the desktop and realizing it has restarted so far. Will give it a couple of days and report the results!

Na, it's not stupid! We often get caught up in the initial frenzy of trying to figure out problems, and forget the easy things. I do it all the time, often ending in a 'DOH' slap on my forehead as I realise I missed something simple

Hmmm. mostly hard freezes! Any memory dumps? Or just having to power cycle to reset? If no memory dumps, you might check all cabling, take each one out and put back in. You might even try replacing cables, if it's a modular PSU.

Did you do a CMOS clear after updating the bios? That's always worth doing to clear out any bits left behind after updating.
